Reading Forex Charts
A chart is a record of what price did, not a forecast of what it will do. Every candle compresses a period into four numbers โ open, high, low and close โ and the sequence of those candles is what traders read for trend, momentum and the levels the market keeps returning to.
One caveat specific to FX. There is no central exchange and no consolidated tape, so no two brokers show exactly the same candle. Highs, lows and volume are drawn from whichever liquidity pool your provider aggregates, which is why levels can differ slightly between platforms and why the volume you see is tick count rather than real traded size.
OHLC
The four prices behind every candle โ open, high, low and close. The body spans open to close; the wicks reach the extremes traded in that period.
Timeframe
How much time one candle represents. Higher timeframes carry more weight and produce fewer, cleaner signals; lower ones carry more noise per signal.
Tick Volume
The count of price updates in a period. Spot FX has no true volume figure, so this stands in as a proxy for how active the market was.
Indicator
A calculation derived from price or tick volume โ moving averages, RSI, MACD. All of them are backward-looking by construction.
Frequently asked
A forex chart plots the exchange rate of one currency against another over time. Each candle summarises a slice of that period with four prices: where it opened, the highest and lowest it traded, and where it closed. The body spans open to close and the wicks mark the extremes, so a long wick tells you a level was tested and rejected within the period.
