Green means the row currency gained on the column currency; red means it lost. Colour intensity scales with the size of the move relative to the largest move on this timeframe.

Understanding the Heat Map

A single currency pair moves for two reasons at once, and it never tells you which. EUR/USD falling could be euro weakness, dollar strength, or a bit of both. A heat map resolves that by showing every major against every other major simultaneously, so the currency that is green across its whole row is genuinely strong rather than merely paired against something weak.

How this grid is built. Each cell is derived from the two currencies' moves against the basket, which guarantees the grid is internally consistent: every cell is the exact negative of its mirror, and the diagonal is always zero. A heat map that breaks those two rules is showing you data that cannot all be true at once.

Base / Quote

In EUR/USD the euro is the base and the dollar is the quote. The pair rises when the base strengthens against the quote β€” which is exactly what a row-versus-column cell measures.

Currency Strength

One currency measured against all the others rather than a single counterpart. Separates whether a pair moved because of the base, the quote, or both.

Antisymmetry

Every cell is the exact negative of its mirror across the diagonal. If the grid ever breaks that rule, the data behind it is inconsistent.

Percent vs Pips

Percent is comparable across pairs; pips are not, because a pip is a different fraction of the price on every pair. Compare in percent.

Frequently asked

It is a grid of every major currency against every other, colour-coded by how much each has moved over the selected period. Green means the row currency has gained against the column currency, red means it has lost, and the stronger the colour the larger the move. It compresses 28 currency pairs into one picture so you can see at a glance which currencies are leading and which are lagging.
