Timing Notes

What the clock does not show you

London / New York overlap

The deepest window of the day — tightest spreads, largest ranges, most participants.

Daylight saving

London and New York shift on different dates and Tokyo not at all, so these UTC hours move part of the year.

Rollover · 21:00–22:00 UTC

Swap is applied and the book is at its thinnest. Avoid sending market orders through it.

Sunday open

Prices can gap from Friday’s close. Stops fill at the first available price, not the level you set.

Understanding Market Hours

FX has no opening bell. It trades continuously from the Sydney open on Sunday evening to the New York close on Friday, and what people call a “session” is simply the hours during which a particular financial centre has banks quoting. Liquidity therefore rolls around the globe rather than starting and stopping.

The overlaps are the part that matters. When two centres are open at once there are more participants pricing the same instruments, which shows up as deeper books, tighter spreads and wider ranges. The overlap windows listed here are calculated from the session hours in the timeline above rather than quoted separately, so the two always agree.

Session

The hours when a given financial centre is doing business. Sessions are conventions, not switches — liquidity fades in and out at the edges.

Overlap

A window when two centres are open at once. More participants quoting means deeper books, tighter spreads and larger ranges.

Rollover

The daily settlement point where swap is applied and positions roll to the next value date. Reliably the thinnest book of the day.

Weekend Gap

The difference between Friday’s close and Sunday’s open. Stops do not protect you across it, because there is no price in between.

Frequently asked

Spot FX trades continuously from the Sydney open on Sunday evening to the New York close on Friday — roughly 22:00 UTC Sunday through 22:00 UTC Friday. There is no central exchange to open or close, so the "market" is simply whichever financial centres currently have banks quoting. That is why activity rolls around the clock rather than starting and stopping.
