Understanding Correlation
Correlation tells you whether two pairs have been moving as one. It runs from −100, where they move in exact opposition, through 0, where there is no consistent relationship, to +100, where they move in lockstep. Its practical value is not in finding trades but in understanding what your open trades actually add up to.
The risk most traders miss. Long EUR/USD and long GBP/USD at 85% correlation is not two independent positions risking 1% each — it is close to a single position risking nearly 2%, and both legs will lose together. Correlations also move: the same two pairs read differently on every timeframe above, and in a broad risk-off move almost everything converges against the dollar at once.
Coefficient
The −100 to +100 figure in each cell. Sign gives the direction of the relationship, magnitude gives its consistency over the period measured.
Positive Correlation
The pairs tend to rise and fall together. Two positions in the same direction on strongly positive pairs concentrate risk rather than spreading it.
Negative Correlation
The pairs tend to move in opposition. Just as strong a relationship as a positive one — trading both in the same direction largely cancels out.
Regime Shift
Correlations are not constants. Under broad risk-off, most pairs converge against the dollar and historical relationships stop describing the present.
Frequently asked
It measures the extent to which two currency pairs have moved together over a given period, expressed from −100 to +100. At +100 the two pairs moved in lockstep, at −100 they moved in exact opposition, and at 0 there was no consistent relationship at all. It describes how prices moved relative to one another; it says nothing about direction, size or cause.
